What is a content gap analysis?
A content gap analysis compares what your competitors publish with what you publish. A gap is a topic your audience searches for that a competitor answers and you don't.
Every gap is traffic going to someone else. It matters twice now. Google ranks the page that answers the question. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini quote it. If you have no page on the topic, you are invisible in both. For the full definition, see our content gap analysis glossary entry.
How do you do a content gap analysis?
- Pick the right competitor. Choose the site that shows up when your customers search, not just the one you see as a rival.
- List both sites' topics. Their articles and guides on one side, your pages on the other.
- Match by meaning. “How to find keywords” and “keyword research tips” are the same topic. Exact-match keyword lists miss this.
- Drop what doesn't fit you. Their company news, product updates and customer stories are not your gaps.
- Rank what's left. Write first the topics closest to someone ready to buy what you sell.
The tool above does steps two to five for you. Our gap analysis playbook covers the manual method in detail. Google's own guidance on creating helpful content explains why covering what searchers need beats writing more.
What to do with your gaps
Start with the gaps marked high value. Write one article per gap, aimed at the searcher's question rather than at the competitor's page. Answer the question in the first paragraph, then go deeper than they did.
Gaps also move. Competitors publish every week, so a list from today is out of date next month. CiteClip watches your competitors continuously, adds each new gap to your list, and drafts the article for you to review.
Frequently asked
What is a content gap analysis?
A content gap analysis compares the topics a competitor covers with the topics your site covers. The gaps are subjects your audience searches for that a competitor answers and you don't. Each gap is an article you could publish to win that traffic back.
How does this free content gap analysis tool work?
It reads the public sitemap of both sites, collects the competitor's articles and guides, and compares their topics with your pages by meaning, not exact keywords. It then drops pages you already cover and pages that only make sense for the competitor, and suggests the article you should write for each real gap.
How is this different from a keyword gap in Ahrefs or Semrush?
Keyword gap reports list keywords a competitor ranks for and you don't, which needs a paid index and often returns thousands of rows. This tool compares published topics directly and returns a short list of articles to write, each with a reason. It works on any site with a sitemap, including new sites with no rankings yet.
How many gaps can I see for free?
Every analysis is free and shows your top three gaps in full. A free account shows the complete list and keeps watching that competitor, adding new gaps when they publish something you don't cover.
What if it finds no pages on my competitor?
The tool needs a public sitemap or linked articles to read. If a competitor has neither, or blocks crawlers, try another competitor. Sites that publish a blog, guides or a resource center work best.
